Modern Pet Ownership: Crucial Laws Every Owner Must Know!
New Pet Laws 2026 – What Dog and Cat Owners Must Know and Prepare For
Pet ownership in Bangkok is about to change! In 2026, every pet owner must be aware.
The new pet laws are set to take effect on January 10, 2026, establishing various regulations that owners must strictly follow for the safety of their pets and to prevent accidentally breaking the law. Let's get prepared before this regulation officially comes into force!

Pet Ownership Restrictions Based on Living Space Size
This new law also regulates the number of pets allowed based on the size of the residential space, directly affecting the number of animals an owner can keep in different types of accommodation, such as houses or condos.
- Rental rooms / Condos sized 20-80 square meters: Allowed no more than 1 pet
- Rental rooms / Condos sized 80 square meters and above: Allowed no more than 2 pets
- Houses with land not exceeding 20 square Wah: Allowed no more than 2 pets
- Houses with land not exceeding 50 square Wah: Allowed no more than 3 pets
- Houses with land not exceeding 100 square Wah: Allowed no more than 4 pets
- Houses with land of 100 square Wah and above: Allowed no more than 6 pets
Limiting the number of pets under this new regulation aims to control stray animal issues, reduce the risk of animal-borne diseases in large cities, and help prevent conflicts within neighborhoods. All of these are guidelines according to the Pet Law that will be enforced soon.
Why Is Pet Registration Necessary?
Pet registration in Bangkok will become a legal requirement under the new law taking effect on January 10, 2026. This ensures pet regulation and care are systematically managed, and it helps track pets if they go missing or are irresponsibly abandoned in public areas. This approach aims to foster owner accountability and reduce stray animal problems in the long run.

Steps for Registration and Microchipping
Pet owners in Bangkok must be aware of the relevant regulations: pets must be registered and microchipped within 120 days of birth, or within 30 days of being brought to live in the Bangkok area.
Step 1: Document Preparation
Before taking your pet to a veterinary clinic or district office for registration under the pet law, owners should prepare the following essential documents:
- National ID Card of the pet owner
- House Registration (Tabien Baan) where the pet resides
- Vaccination Certificate (if any)
- Sterilization Certificate (if any)
- Letter of Consent from the landlord (in case of a tenant)
- Certificate (Khoso-so 1)
- Power of Attorney (if appointing another person to act on your behalf) (if any)
Step 2: Registration and Microchipping
Take your pet to register and get microchipped at a veterinary clinic authorized by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA). Microchips will help track pets if they are lost and reduce the abandonment of animals in public spaces.
All of this complies with the mandates of the pet law that is about to take effect.
Bangkok has 8 veterinary clinics that offer free microchipping services for dogs and cats. Owners should plan ahead by calling to reserve a slot and verifying required documents to ensure a smooth, time-saving registration and microchipping process.

The clinics listed above also provide rabies vaccinations and sterilization services free of charge.
Step 3: Receive the Registration Number for the Pet Law
Once the process is complete, owners will receive a registration number and vital information related to their pet. That's it! The registration and microchipping process is complete, in line with the pet law mandates.
If you are a pet owner, do not forget to get ready before the new law takes effect on January 10, 2026, ensuring compliance with the "Pet Law" designed for the safety of both animals and society.
Rules When Taking Pets Out in Public
- For general dogs and cats: Owners must use a sturdy leash at all times, or carry pets in a suitable bag, cage, or carrier. Do not allow them to disturb others, and always clean up pet waste when in public spaces.
- For specially controlled dogs (such as Pit Bulls, Rottweilers, or dogs with a history of attacking people): They must wear a muzzle and use a highly secure leash, and owners must hold the leash at a distance of no more than 50 centimeters from the dog's neck at all times.
Ban on Rearing or Releasing Animals in Public Spaces, Except in the Following Cases
- Taking animals for medical treatment or vaccination
- Participating in events designated by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration
- Relocating the owner's residence
- Operations carried out by government agencies
- Releasing animals for charity or customary traditions permitted by law
Note: This new law and regulation are not retroactive. Pet owners will not face prosecution for incidents occurring before the law's effective date.
